Why Paper Puzzles Still Beat Puzzle Apps

Why Paper Puzzles Still Beat Puzzle Apps

There are thousands of puzzle apps, many of them free. So why do so many people still prefer an old-fashioned puzzle book and a pencil? Here is the case for paper.

No ads, no pop-ups, no upsells

Free apps pay for themselves with interruptions: a video ad between levels, a prompt to buy hints, a notification to come back. A puzzle book has none of that. The only thing on the page is the puzzle.

Your phone stays out of reach

Open a puzzle app and you are one swipe away from email, social media and news. A puzzle book keeps the phone out of your hands entirely, which is what makes it a real break.

The pencil makes it physical

Circling a word or crossing it off the list is more satisfying with a pencil than a tap. The tactile feel of paper and graphite makes each find feel earned.

Easier on your eyes

Paper does not glow. Large print puzzle books are especially comfortable to read for longer sessions, without the strain that comes from staring at a small bright screen.

A finished book you can keep

An app's progress disappears into a server somewhere. A finished puzzle book sits on your shelf, full of your circles and notes. It is a small, real record of time well spent.
